Reaching Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Elnabi Holistic Ministry (EHM) envisions reaching Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (CASD) in low-income families by  providing home-based CASD therapy and by setting up CASD therapy centers. With God’s blessing to grow as a  non-profit humanitarian organization, EHM will expand its skilled staff and material resources to provide sustainable home- and center-based therapy support for CASD in Addis Ababa and all regions of Ethiopia; family counseling and advising schools for inclusive education. Currently, EHM is delivering volunteered home-based therapy to 14kids in Addis Ababa and 5 kids in Mekelle. With your support, partnership, donations and prayers, we strive to expand our heartfelt service to more kids in more regions to reach them for early age intervension.

“Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 18:10)

“ከነዚህ ከታናናሾቹ አንዱን እንዳትንቁ ተጠንቀቁ፤መላእክቶቻቸው በሰማያት ዘወትር በሰማያት ያለውን የአባቴን ፊት ያያሉ እላችኋለሁና” (ማቴ 18:10)

Regardless of our Profession, ministry and ambition, we finally realized that God has been equipping us for the last 8 years with the necessary heart to address those with special need.”

Elnabi Samuel: A Story of Hope for Children with Autism in Ethiopia and Beyond

Elnabi Samuel, 8 years old in 2025, is an Ethiopian boy and one of an estimated 500,000 children on the autism spectrum in the country. When his parents, Samuel Estifanos (an assistant professor) and Berseheal Fesseha, first learned of his diagnosis at the age of three, they were shocked and overwhelmed. They turned to prayer, seeking God’s guidance and restoration, and soon received a vision: a calling to improve the lives of children like Elnabi, informed by studies, expert consultations, and firsthand experience. They recognized that, despite the growing number of children with autism, very limited efforts exist in Ethiopia to support them.

Over the past three years, Elnabi’s parents have discovered the transformative impact of home-based therapy. Daily, structured activities—ranging from simple speech exercises and turn-taking games to routine-building for self-care—have helped their son make significant progress. Every small milestone achieved through sponsored therapeutic interventions fills the parents with joy and gratitude, and they praise God for His wonderful purpose in the lives of these special children.

At the same time, they experienced the heavy financial burden of private schools with inclusive programs, which remain inaccessible for many families. Recognizing this challenge, they built confidence in home-based therapy as a sustainable, effective alternative. They also emphasize the importance of counseling parents, sharing knowledge, strategies, and emotional support as a humanitarian act to assist families—especially those in low-income settings—who otherwise could not send their children to school.

Through these efforts, children can acquire basic communication, social, and self-care skills, preparing them to thrive in any school that welcomes them. Yet, the broader landscape remains challenging: the scarcity of specialists, limited access to therapy, societal stigma, and underdiagnosis leave many Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (CASD) in vulnerable situations.

Currently, very few schools in Ethiopia are equipped to teach children with special needs, and those that exist face enormous challenges. Autism prevalence continues to rise, and the war in Tigray left many children without care for 2–3 years, underscoring the urgent need for intervention. To mitigate this, more centers must join as determined advocates on the front line—both in Addis Ababa, Mekelle, and beyond Ethiopia’s borders. Expanding access to home-based therapy, parental counseling, and inclusive education can empower children with ASD to gain independence, develop communication and social skills, and participate meaningfully in their communities.

Elnabi’s story is one of hope, perseverance, and faith. It demonstrates that, with consistent support, parental involvement, and humanitarian efforts, children with autism can thrive, families can find strength, and communities—both in Ethiopia and beyond—can embrace the potential of every child. By investing in these children today, we can build a future where no child with autism is left behind, and where lessons learned in Ethiopia serve as a model for global autism support initiatives.
